aeolodicon is the blog of Simon FitzGerald, a space for him to enthuse on the pipe organ, particularly the wealth of recordings that give a glimpse of the power and beauty of this King of Instruments.
Simon fell in love with the organ as a youngster, and has been playing and listening to the King of Instruments ever since. He took his first lessons in the beautiful late Georgian church of St Peter, Hammersmith (West London), subsequently learning at Durham Cathedral whilst a student at the University of Durham. During this time he was the Wallis Organ Scholar of St John’s College, Durham. After serving a number of churches in Durham, he was director of music at St John’s Church, Watford, Hertfordshire for many years.
Simon is now based in the West Midlands, playing the organ regularly in a small local church, offering occasional recitals, and also playing a harpsichord and small organ at home.
When not playing or listening to organs he works as Head of Science and Technology at a specialist measurement science company; he has a doctorate in chemistry, and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.
